Reducing Nitrogen Loss with Nitrogen Stabilizers

Nitrogen is a key factor for growing every crop. When you use it as an input, you want to make sure you get the most out of it.

The triple action protection of our NEON products keep nitrogen in your soil for longer, ensuring it’s always available to your crop when you need it to be. Plus, by reducing denitrification, volatilization, and leaching, you’re helping your plants, and your planet.

Three Forms of Nitrogen Loss:

Volatilization

Occurs when urea is converted to ammonia gas that is lost to the atmosphere.

Risk Factors
  • Nitrogen is applied to soil surface or shallow banded, unprotected

Leaching

Occurs when nitrate passes through the soil via excess moisture and moves below the root zone.

Risk Factors
  • Sandy soils
  • Water-logged soils

Denitrification

Occurs when soils are saturated in an anaerobic environment and lost through the conversion of nitrate to gaseous forms of nitrogen:
NO, N2 or N2O

Risk Factors
  • Extended periods of water-logged soils
  • Higher temperatures

Best management practices can be adopted to reduce the risk of nitrogen loss:

Time of Application
Apply nitrogen fertilizer in the spring, as close to seeding as possible or while crops are growing (foliar application).

Application Method
Band nitrogen fertilizer to limit exposure and reduce risk of volatilization.

Use a Nitrogen Stabilizer
Use a nitrogen stabilizer with active ingredients like NBPT to protect against volatilization and DCD to protect against leaching and denitrification.

How Can Nitrogen Stabilizers Reduce Nitrogen Loss?

NBPT (N-butyl-thiophosphoric-triamide)

Strongly blocks the urease enzyme in soil, which in turn reduces nitrogen losses to volatilization; keeping nitrogen in the stable NH4+ (ammonium) form.

DCD (Dicyandiamide)

Inhibits the activity of the nitrosomonas bacteria in the soil, slowing the conversion of NH4+ (Ammonium) to NO3- (Nitrate), both of which are plant available forms. Once nitrogen is in the NO3- (Nitrate) form it is highly susceptible to rapid conversion to NO2- (Nitrogen Dioxide)/NO (Nitric Oxide) N2O (Nitrous Oxide), all of which are easily lost due to being gaseous forms of nitrogen.

Take advantage of fall and spring applications of nitrogen to ensure your crops have available nitrogen longer into the growing season for optimal yield and protein.

Benefits of NexusBioAg’s Line Up of Nitrogen Stabilizers

  • Select the right stabilizer to protect against loss.
  • Take advantage of fall application of nitrogen.
  • Ensure that your plants have available nitrogen longer into the growing season for optimal yields and proteins.
  • Using a stabilizer is insurance to protect your valuable nitrogen investment.
  • We don’t know what the growing season will bring, hedge your investment with the proper stabilizer.
  • Effective in the correction of current deficiencies and in longer term soil building.

Benefits of PENXCEL Technology:

NEON Air, NEON Surface, and N-Yield use PENXCEL technology.

PENXCEL drives active ingredients deeper into urea granules resulting in more effective protection of your investment.

PENXCEL speeds the blending process. With low viscosity, it pours quickly even in the cold weather. It easily coats and blends with fertilizer. It blends up to 25% faster than other industry standard formulations with granular fertilizer, saving time during the critical application season. It also is non-corrosive to your equipment.
